Hebden-gate!

Hebden-Gate. A potted history

In June 2013 Hebden Bridge Burlesque Festival was refused the right to stage events at Hebden Bridge Picture House by the Town Council's Sub Committee with the following explanation:

“The Picture House Committee does not feel that it is appropriate for Hebden Royd Town Council to be associated with the Hebden Bridge Burlesque Festival. Burlesque arouses strong feelings, and many people feel it is demeaning to women, and raises issues of gender equality. It is also inevitable if held in the Hebden Bridge Picture House that it would be seen to be associated with Hebden Royd Town Council, so the committee declines the approach to host a part of the Hebden Bridge Burlesque Festival.”

On 10 July we publicly challenged the Town Council to examine closely the decision-making process and reasoning undertaken by The Picture House Committee and presented a petition numbering over 1150 names, requesting the decision we reconsidered. We also had the backing of our Trade Union, Equity in this action and the burlesque community was well-represented at the meeting.

In August 2013, following extensive lobbying and National Press Coverage, the Council rescinded the decision to refuse us the right to use Hebden Bridge Picture House as a venue. The Council passed an undertaking to develop a new Booking Policy for the venue which was voted on in September. Unfortunately, the Booking Policy came too late for the 2014 Festival. We are delighted to announce that the Hebden Bridge Burlesque Gala 2014 will be staged in the neighbouring town of Todmorden in the magnificent Todmodren Hippodrome. We are thrilled to be working with a supportive and enthusiastic team at Tod Hipp and can't wait to stage shows in the beautiful Edwardian auditorium.

Meanwhile, our message to anyone who tries to prevent anyone staging Burlesque continues to be:

WE KNOW BURLESQUE ISN'T FOR EVERYONE.

WE DON'T WANT - OR NEED - IT TO BE.

BUT IT IS LEGAL AND IT IS ART.

WE BELIEVE YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO CHOSE WHAT YOU SPEND YOUR TIME AND MONEY ON AND WE ASK THAT YOU EXTEND US AND OUR AUDIENCES THE SAME COURTESY.
